Master your workout intensities by following personalized heart rate information from your Garmin to become a stronger, faster runner. 

Most runners run at an effort that feels fast and satisfying most of the time at the expense of saving targeted harder efforts for purposeful runs with specific training benefits.

If you have never differentiated your workouts, or aren’t sure how hard or easy different training runs should be to maximize specific training benefits, this program is for you.

10 Weeks

First Group Workout:  Thursday, May 26

Weekly Training Sessions:  Thursdays, May 26 – Thursday, July 28 at 6:30pm  – Pittsburgh locations (North Shore trail, Southside trail & Schenley Oval)

Price:  $50  

Participants will nail down their individual lactate threshold at the first group workout on May 26 and then receive suggested heart rate intensities calibrated from that data for setting their individual ideal easy, speed interval and threshold workout intensities.

WHY DOES LACTATE THRESHOLD MATTER?

Using Lactate Threshold (LT) as a training benchmark is important because it improves and decreases based on training.  By comparison, Max Heart Rate (MHR) is a static benchmark and therefore so are training zones set from it.

*Although a Garmin GPS watch is not required, using one will allow participants to determine and track heart rate goals.  Participants without one will be coached by perceived exertion which will still be beneficial but not as accurate.   

  • This is a late spring/summer program.  In the case of severe weather including thunder or lightening, weekly group workouts will be rescheduled or cancelled. 

MEET YOUR COACH

Karen Harr, Certified Running Coach

Karen is Fleet Feet Sports’ Training Director and has competed in many races including 17 marathons and the Pittsburgh Marathon Tri twice.  She has run the Boston Marathon seven times, is a RRCA certified coach and is passionate about the benefits of using heart rate metrics to differentiate training runs (mostly easy, sometimes hard) to build base mileage and develop distance runners.
